Aggression and Self-Preservation
Aggression and Self-Preservation: Aggression can have benefits or negative effects. Aggressive behavior is an individual or collective social interaction that is a hostile behavior with the intention of inflicting damage or harm. Two broad categories of aggression are commonly distinguished. One includes affective (emotional) and hostile, reactive, or retaliatory aggression that is a response to provocation. The other includes instrumental, goal-oriented or predatory, in which aggression is used as a mean to achieve a goal. Who is the aggressor in this conflict? The Israelis or the Palesinians?
Aggression against Israel
Three waves of aggression have been launched against Israel during the last 70 years, in attempts by Israel’s enemies to destroy the Jewish state. The first wave, an attempt to defeat the Israeli army on the battlefield, began in 1948 and continued, with interruptions, until 1973. The second wave was the Yom Kippur War, which was launched with simultaneous assaults by Syria and Egypt, from the north and the south, respectively, caught Israel by surprise, before it had a chance to mobilize its army reserves, and these armies initially made substantial advances on both fronts.
The first wave of aggression naturally had the support of the Arab world. The second wave was also supported by Europe’s far left and various fringe terror organizations. But the global campaign for the delegitimization of Israel will need much broader support if it is to succeed. It is not very difficult to mobilize such support, starting with the United Nations, the Quartet, Muslims living in Western Europe, and the well-meaning “liberals”. Fortunately, Israel has grown strong economically and militarily over the years and should be able to overcome this third wave of aggression, as it has the first two.
IsraelPalestine For Critical Thinkers: #10 Aggression & Self-Preservation
Self-preservation is a behavior that ensures the survival of an organism. It is almost universal among living organisms. Self preservation is essentially the process of an organism preventing itself from being harmed or killed and is considered a basic instinct in most organisms. Most call it a “survival instinct”. Self-preservation is also thought by some to be the basis of rational and logical thought and behavior.
The two most fundamental animal instincts are that of self-preservation and reproduction. Human beings are different, as the Western European countries demonstrate. They are already experiencing negative population growth. And the level of defense spending of NATO bloc members raises a serious question as to whether anything could provoke Western Europe to defend itself militarily. Israel faces immediate security threats far greater than any Western European country, and can even less afford any waning of the healthy impulse towards self-defense.
