Beitin Archaeological Excavations

Beitin – Bethel

For more than 150 years scholars have agreed that the village of Beitin, north of Jerusalem, is the site of biblical Bethel. However there are claims that El Bireh is the Biblical Beit El.  Professor David T. Sugimoto of the Keio University Faculty of Letters Department of Archaeology and Ethnology conducted archaeological excavations at this site to help the locals to develop tourism resources through conservation of the site. This was a joint project with the Department of Antiquities and Cultural Heritage in the Palestinian Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities.
