The BSMJ operates in two primary modes:  First as a HUB serving as meeting places for all the diverse communities of Israel, and in particular those from the city of Jerusalem.  Students and teachers from all sectors participate in a wide range of activities including enrichment programs. Families from all backgrounds visit the exhibitions; interact with S&T and with each other under the guidance of a multicultural team of STEM university students. Secondly and just as importantly, as a LAB that develops and tests new technologies, tools and pedagogy. In this mode, the museum engages people with S&T and transforms STEM education in the museum and in the classrooms. Operation is provided by an interdisciplinary team with the support of volunteer researchers and engineers.
