Persons with disabilities often struggle to find a place in Israel’s dating scene. So Inbar, a national program that helps integrate people with disabilities, has formed a unique program, thought to be the only one in the world that connects persons with disabilities to potential matches.

“Israel is a very family-oriented society,” Director Laurie Groner said. “While society is increasingly welcoming to those with disabilities, the challenges of social inclusion they face grow exponentially as their able-bodied friends marry and settle into the routine of family life.”

Groner pointed out that many of the singles who attend the events are employed and educated, but still face challenges when dating and socializing.

“They are functioning adults, mostly employed, many with university degrees,” Groner stressed, “We hear all the time that with all of their challenges, loneliness is the greatest challenge they face.”

Since its inception, four years ago, the program has already led to successful matches, including the 2012 marriage ofInbari and Neta, which aired live on Israeli television. Still others attend the meetings hoping to have a way of socializing and meeting a potential match either through the program’s matchmakers or a meeting at an Inbar event.

Batya, who attends college, found the group after her sister saw an advertisement for the group.

“I tried multiple matchmakers and I was never really able to find somebody,” Batya said. Since coming to the Inbar meet-ups, she dated one man from the group, but still is searching for Mr. Right.

Ori, who also attends college, hopes that the Inbar group will be his way of meeting “a nice girl who has the same needs that I have; any kind of disability as long as she’s nice.”

While both Ori and Batya remain single, the group has helped both of them make friends and socialize more. Batya pointed out that one of the greatest benefits of Inbar was not only to find a mate but the chance “to connect to people who are like me.”
