The roofed underground Arches Pool reservoir, was built in 789, is the most significant Abbasid building in Israel. It is called the Pool of St. Helena who ordered it to be dug. Others called it the Pool of the Infidel because Helena claimed all the honor for building the pool not mentioning the help of the Lord. Another name is The Pool of The Goats because the goats were watered here. The pool was originally filled by a natural spring underneath it and by a central aqueduct coming from the region of Gezer. Today is is filled by Mekorot, the Israel water monopoly. Watch you heads on the descent. The roof is low. You can paddle around the pool in little boats but don’t forget you life-jacket.
