Establishing the Institute for Intelligence and Special Operations (“Mossad”)
The Mossad was found in December 1941 under the recommendation of then Prime Minister David Ben-Gurion. The establishment of the State and the invasion by the Arab States’ regular armies required different deployment. The need to create an intelligence infrastructure, establish national frameworks, and define responsibilities was now clear and urgent.
Establishing the Mossad was part of David Ben Gurion’s recognition, immediately following the establishment of the State of Israel, that there was a need to establish national frameworks for the intelligence bodies that had operated during the pre-State period.
The Mossad has been involved in special operations and activity in the service of the State of Israel, such as the pursuit of Nazi criminals, the pinnacle of which was the capture of the Nazi criminal Adolf Eichmann in 1960.
