In the footsteps of Christian Denominations in Jerusalem – Audio Walking Tour of the Old City of Jerusalem
A tour through the Christian and Armenian quarters
Time of tour: 4 to 6 hours
Processions of priests in dramatic ceremonial garb, emotional pilgrims with prayers on their lips and large wooden crosses on their backs, churches enveloped in the fragrance of incense and monastery gardens secluded behind heavy iron gates – these are the sights of Jerusalem in the footsteps of the Crusaders. A city that embraces cultures and customs from all over the Christian world and yet, for many local residents, it is a journey to an unknown land.
Jerusalem is the holiest city in Christianity. Jesus was in Jerusalem during the early and the final years of his life, and this is where he was crucified, buried and was resurrected. The first Christian community was founded in Jerusalem, “the Mother of all Churches,” and millions of believers over generations have cast their eyes towards the earthly and the heavenly Jerusalem.
The tour will begin at Jaffa gate and will end in the Armenian monastery at the heart of the Armenian quarter. Highlights include: The Greek Catholic Patriarchate, Saint Salvador Franciscan Monastery, The Church of the Holy Sepulcher, The Coptic Orthodox Patriarchate, Alexander Nevsky Church, the Church of the Redeemer, The Maronite Compound and Christ Church.
